The app reads raw audio from the microphone and calculates the RMS level of each block of samples. That is normalised against digital full scale to give a value in dBFS, then shifted onto the sound pressure scale using a calibration offset. The audio itself is thrown away the moment the number is produced — it is never buffered to a file.
That calibration offset is the honest part of any phone sound meter. A handset microphone is not a laboratory instrument: it has its own frequency response, automatic gain behaviour and physical placement. The app ships with a sensible default and lets you trim it, which is why readings can be brought in line with a real sound level meter rather than being permanently a few decibels out.
No. Audio is analysed in real time to produce a loudness number and then discarded. Nothing is written to storage and nothing is transmitted. There is no speech recognition of any kind.
Close, but not certified. Phone microphones vary between models and are not calibrated instruments, so treat readings as a good approximation. With the calibration setting adjusted against a known reference, most phones land within a few decibels. It is not a substitute for a professional meter where a legal or occupational measurement is required.
As a general guide, sustained exposure above roughly 85 dB carries a hearing risk, and the safe exposure time falls sharply as levels rise beyond that. Brief peaks matter less than long exposure. For anything health related, consult the guidance from your national health or occupational safety body.
Yes. Measuring is entirely local and works offline. A connection is only used to load ads.
Measuring sound requires reading the microphone — that is the whole function. You can revoke the permission at any time in Android settings; the app will simply stop measuring.
